The Occupational Safety and Health Act 1970 is the primary federal legislation governing worker safety in the USA. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is the agency responsible for enforcing the law. Some aspects of health and safety are governed at the state level, so there are slight variations in practice between US states.
OSHA cites the need to have a lone working policy as a general duty.
They have a Severe Violator Enforcement Program which enforces regulations – and imposes civil penalties, including fines, for non-compliance.
The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) is the primary national agency covering worker protection in Canada.
However, regulations are complicated by the fact that there are fourteen jurisdictions – one federal, ten provincial and three territorial. Each of these governments has its own health and safety legislation, which outline the general rights and responsibilities of the employer, the supervisor and the worker.
So, employers must be aware of local conditions when formulating their own lone working policies.

Safe Hub deployed across 47 states in the USA
In 2016, American Water selected us to provide lone worker protection services. As the largest publicly traded water and wastewater utility company in the US, it serves 15 million people across 47 states. We deployed our proprietary platform, Safe Hub, via apps for both Android and Apple iOS smartphones to meet their workers’ specific needs and improve safety. One key factor was that we were able to install our proprietary monitoring software on their network, allowing the company’s Security Team to monitor workers’ safety themselves.
