As remote and flexible working leads to an increase in the number of people working alone some or all of the time, lone and remote worker protection is becoming an increasingly important aspect of a health and safety policy. In 2014, the government introduced the right of flexible working to all UK employees with more than six months of service. Employees are now actively seeking to access flexible and remote working and the improved work/life balance this can bring, and employers are seeing the benefits in a happier and more productive workforce.
Flexible and responsive protection
Safe Hub is a feature-rich, BS8484 Gold certified, web-based protection system. It connects lone workers, via dedicated devices and user-friendly apps to Mitec, a state-of-the-art alarm receive centre (ARC). Using GPS the platform can locate workers wherever they are in the world ensuring that in an emergency, help can reach them immediately.
User-friendly – and responsive to every organisation’s needs
Each lone and remote worker’s situation will carry with it specific risks – but it will also present opportunities to enhance safety. Safe Hub has been designed to be accessible on such a broad range of devices that every worker will find a device suited to their exact needs. It offers a broad range of emergency, buddy, proactive, reactive, broadcast and virtual barrier protection in one bundle.
Safe Hub has an app that works on all desktops and smartphones and can even be used on standard mobiles with a short dial programming – perfect for home or office based workers. The platform supports dedicated products such as the Spot Gen3 satellite device for use in remote areas; and SOSFob and ProtectMe, which are designed for customer-facing staff who need wearable or discrete devices. The platform can also be used on intrinsically safe devices designed for use by staff near combustible materials or in industrial locations; and it even provides a beacon system for use where worker’s exposure should be time-limited.
We have designed Safe Hub to be completely device agnostic – it supports all smartphones (Windows, iOS, and Android operating systems), BlackBerry and standard mobile phones; dedicated devices; satellite phones; intrinsically safe phones, and it also works on desktops and laptops. No other platform supports such a broad range of devices.
Safe Hub allows health and safety staff to set up individual profiles for each lone worker – even if they sometimes share a device – defining the exact engagement, monitoring and escalation protocols that will suit their needs. The platform provides an accurate cross-device snapshot of system activity. In addition, it offers precise and prompt reporting that ensures compliance with UK Health and Safety Executive requirements, promotes health and safety, and facilitates auditing and corporate governance.
“It was essential for us to find a partner with a proven track record in delivering an effective solution. We were looking for a great product, excellent customer service and a partner who understood our working environments. In practice, this meant the supplier had to be prepared to adapt their solution to fit our needs – a challenge that Lone Worker Solutions responded to with enthusiasm and dedication.” Nicholas Santillo Jr., Vice President, Internal Audit and Chief Security Officer, American Water.
Increase user confidence with effective training
The lone worker industry has a poor track record of end-users actually exploiting technology when it is deployed. Often the problem has been attributable to end-users not becoming comfortable with the technology at the beginning of deployment. This means they are reluctant to use systems and unsure of what might happen. At Lone Worker Solutions, we have developed an intuitive platform that puts end-users first. The simple and effective rollout programme breaks through the fear barrier at the outset increasing confidence among end-users.
