United States of America

The Occupational Safety and Health Act 1970 is the primary federal legislation governing worker safety in the USA. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is the agency responsible for enforcing the law. Some aspects of health and safety are governed at the state level, so there are slight variations in practice between US states.

OSHA cites the need to have a lone working policy as a general duty.

They have a Severe Violator Enforcement Program which enforces regulations – and imposes civil penalties, including fines, for non-compliance.

Canada

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) is the primary national agency covering worker protection in Canada.

However, regulations are complicated by the fact that there are fourteen jurisdictions – one federal, ten provincial and three territorial. Each of these governments has its own health and safety legislation, which outline the general rights and responsibilities of the employer, the supervisor and the worker.

So, employers must be aware of local conditions when formulating their own lone working policies.

Case Study: American Water

Safe Hub deployed across 47 states in the USA

In 2016, we were selected to provide lone worker protection services for American Water. We deployed our proprietary platform, Safe Hub, via apps for both Android and Apple smartphones. American Water is the largest publicly traded water and wastewater utility company in the US, serving 15 million people across 47 states.

American Water employs 6,800 people in a wide range of roles, many of whom work alone, or out of their colleagues’ sight or hearing. In these scenarios and many others, the app enhances existing measures to improve safety.

Safe Hub was considered a frontrunner in the utility company’s selection process. American Water wanted a supplier who would work closely with them to deliver a system that would meet their workers’ specific needs and improve safety. One key factor was that we were able to install Alert Manager, our proprietary monitoring software, on their network. This allows American Water’s Security Team to monitor workers’ safety themselves.
