Specialist Devices: ProtectMe has a host of features


This week, we shine the spotlight on one of our dedicated lone worker safety devices. Meet ProtectMe, a low-cost and durable product, which provides emergency, proactive and reactive support. Boasting a screen and simple control buttons, it easily connects lone workers to our Safe Hub platform. And as it’s enabled with Red Alert, Yellow Alert, Safe Check, Worker Down, Group Alert and Safe Beacon, it’s our most feature-rich dedicated device.


Safe Hub protects lone workers when they need it

Our proprietary Safe Hub platform connects ProtectMe to Mitec’s Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). Mitec is a Technology Centre and CAT II ARC, accredited to the BS5979 Gold standard. And the centre operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the year.

The software connects ProtectMe to highly trained staff at the ARC using two key communications technologies. The Global Positioning System (GPS) provides location data, which enables ARC staff to pinpoint your worker to within 10 metres. Meanwhile, the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) delivers mobile voice and data, so the user can speak to ARC staff at any time.

The full range of support features

The software platform provides our full range of support functions. For emergency help, there’s Red Alert. In an emergency the user simply presses and holds the SOS button to raise an alarm. They are immediately connected with an ARC operative who will have access to their personal profile and GPS location. Calls are recorded and can include discreet panic words. Backing this up, there is also a Yellow Alert button. Users can leave a voice message, advising ARC staff that they are entering a potentially hazardous situation. In an emergency the ARC will access the recording along with the person’s last known location, dispatching emergency support if needed.

For proactive support, we offer Safe Check, which is a periodic welfare check. Once this feature is activated, the platform will send a message to which the lone worker must respond at predetermined intervals. Should the lone worker fail to respond, then the platform will trigger a Red Alert with the ARC.

And there’s also our reactive support feature, Worker Down. Thanks to ProtectMe’s 3-axis accelerometer, the device has a fall-detection function. If enough force is detected, the device enters a standby mode. It waits for 5 seconds, and if there has been no movement in that time, then a ‘10-beep’ countdown begins. If the countdown is not cancelled, the device automatically raises a Red Alert with the ARC.

Deploying ProtectMe in your organisation

The ProtectMe device can be customised for lone worker management across your organisation. We’ll work with you to ascertain the number of workers who need support, and the level of protection that each requires. You’ll be able to allocate protection and monitoring solutions tailored to each lone worker’s risk assessment. This further extends to defining bespoke escalation and response procedures for each individual job function. You can activate and deactivate protection and monitoring according to your employees’ needs.

Easily deployed, ProtectMe ensures compliance with current health and safety legislation and enables a culture of best practice for lone working. Thanks to the device’s flexibility ProtectMe is supported out-of-the-box by the ARC, and comes with extensive instructions. Using Safe Hub, you’ll be able to identify, locate, communicate with and respond to individual lone workers. But the platform also facilitates real-time reporting. This improved corporate governance and provides legal coverage for managers and shareholders, along with the lone workers they protect.

Case study: Northumbrian Water

Northumbrian Water Group (NWG) has approximately 1,500 employees who are classed as lone workers, in roles including meter readers and samplers. They conducted a lengthy and rigorous competitive selection process before selecting Lone Worker Solutions’ platform. NWG has deployed three pieces of technology, each suitable for staff whose role presents specific risks. For customer-facing staff, NWG chose ProtectMe, a discreet dedicated device that means help is available at the touch of a button. Other staff are protected by our SPOT Gen3 dedicated satellite device and our mobile app for smartphones.
