Protecting estate agents with Safe Hub

How many of us can pass an estate agent without stopping to look in the window? Even if we’re not moving or we can’t afford the luxury pads staring back out at us, it can give us a glimpse into the glossy world of other people’s lives and houses. However, behind the photos of light-filled kitchens and manicured gardens can lurk a much darker side to the industry.

Suzy Lamplugh Trust 'Live Life Safe'

In 1986, the disappearance of 25-year-old estate agent Suzy Lamplugh shocked Britain. Suzy went missing in broad daylight in the middle of a working day after going to show a ‘Mr Kipper’ around a property. Her body was never found, and in 1993 she was presumed murdered and declared legally dead. The Suzy Lamplugh Trust 'Live Life Safe' was set up by her mother Diana Lamplugh to raise awareness of levels of violence and aggression, and to campaign for a safer society. It is still a force in driving legislation for lone workers.

Designed to protect lone workers

Safe Hub is ideally suited for high-flying estate agent professionals. Our Yellow Alert and Safe Check features are great ways to check in regularly once an agent is out on an appointment. Safe Hub works across many devices, including smartphones. Perfect for someone who doesn’t want to be weighed down by the extra kit of a specialist device, particularly if they are out on different appointments and moving between multiple locations. The Red Alert feature lets an agent summon emergency support in the fastest possible time should a situation become dangerous.

Culture and safety systems make working alone safer

However, it’s not just about investing in the right technology. More companies are now teaching a ‘personal safety code’ to employees. Making sure that workers verbally communicate with colleagues about their movements, never accepting a lift from a prospective client if they are alone, and trusting their gut instinct if a situation doesn’t feel right - even if it’s just from speaking on the phone. Instilling a good safety culture will empower employees to go out and practice it in real life. Estate agents might trade in bricks and mortar, but they are essentially dealing with human beings. It is vital that as well as having the right workplace safeguards they are able to read people and situations.

The buying, selling and renting homes sector still has a mainly young demographic, and it's an industry that many women are attracted to. But the reality of an estate agent’s job is that they are often going out alone and entering empty properties to meet complete strangers. For an employer, it doesn’t matter the price of the properties on your books or how swish your offices are if you essentially are sending your staff out the door unprotected.

A lot has changed in the 22 years since Suzy went missing, but a person’s safety should never be taken for granted. Suzy Lamplugh went to do her job one day and never came home. Let’s make sure that never happens again.

Safe Hub is the Suzy Lamplugh’s Trust featured product of the month from June 15.
